Quarantine - All the good things... A chance for gratitude during a pandemic.

I write this blog from a hotel room on the 16th floor of the Sheraton Grand in Sydney. We have been here for 3 days, of a 2 week quarantine after flying in from the USA. I'm in a Facebook group chat for Aussies in quarantine and it is interesting to see the various coping mechanisms. Below, I have copied a post from a fabulous lady called Kylie who has entertained us with hilarious videos and comments.

It's important to take into account that everyone has their own back-story and some have endured huge stresses leading up to this. Some people are posting only negative images and comments about their room, food etc (many with good justification!).

However some are also determined to be positive. For anyone who has had to quarantine or isolate, here's a well-being list collated from my experiences and bunch of people I've met in the Quarantine FB group. Even if you haven't experienced quarantine, most have experienced some kind of lock-down during the pandemic, so I'm sure many will relate!

  • create a to -do list - then don't worry if you didn't follow it - haha

  • entertain yourself with games, creating funny social media posts, books, puzzles.

  • write a list of 5 good things about being in quarantine.

  • if you see a hair in the carpet, don't post it. Ignore and share uplifting snippets

  • sure, if it's awful, shout about it and seek support and change!

  • enjoy taking some time out from the rush of everyday life

  • catch up with people you've not had time to see in a while

  • enjoy long baths

  • dance

  • eat fruit and veggies- super important for health and well-being

  • enjoy not wearing shoes - or pants!

  • enjoy not having to cook, buy petrol, commute

  • invest energy into your business or studies

  • research random stuff - the internet is a seriously big place

  • appreciate being housed and fed, whilst many people are homeless

  • create art or fashion from food packaging, colouring books, sketching

  • research the background of architecture you see out the window.

  • exercise. There are so many jokes and reports about becoming role poly people during times like this, however, it's actually a huge opportunity to do loads of exercise! All this wonderful spare time. The time we have spent years wishing we had. We can run across the room in 11 paces. There's pilates, yoga, squats, mad running on the spot, tai chi, push ups, pretend skipping...

Here is the response from Kylie Buschgens on the "Australians in Quarantine" group, to the question "Tell us good things about quarantine":

Paying attention to how your body feels after you put food in it depending on what the food is. Normally you are busy and distracted and shitty food and it’s side effects can be ignored....not in quarantine. Making friends with random strangers and being reminded that everyone handles things differently and the world doesn’t revolve around you alone. I do this normally and am an empath but it brings it to the forefront of your mind. An extreme appreciation for every breath of fresh air and ray of sunshine...can’t wait for that! Being silly and laughing at yourself for doing dumb things and posting them online in the hope you make somebody smile...why not? Life is short and laughter is the best! Feeling connected to strangers

I have so many but i think the office workers opposite my building are waiting for my daggy dance routine!

You guys are the best.

Fabulous Kylie - so positive. loving these experiences and interactions which we wouldn't have if we weren't here! Agreed, will soooo love that breath of fresh air (especially getting to our farm on the mid north coast)

I'm sure you're making the office workers' Day Kylie

Laura Pennington I hope so. If not it’s a work out anyway...I’m totally uncoordinated
